Whether rescued from Romania or rehomed from one of our UK foster homes, all of our animals need time, patience, and understanding as they adjust to a new environment.
Many of our rescues come from difficult backgrounds. Some were previously owned pets, while others have lived on the streets or in public shelters. Even animals coming from foster care in the UK—though they may seem more settled—can still find the transition into a new home overwhelming. A change in environment, no matter how positive, can be stressful and disorienting, especially when they’ve only been in foster for a short time.
It's completely normal for your new pet to appear scared, withdrawn, or hesitant at first. They may want to spend time alone or seem aloof. This is part of their adjustment process. Give them the space they need, let them come to you on their terms, and allow them to decompress in their own time. With patience and kindness, their trust will grow—and so will your bond.
We strongly encourage adopters to research the experiences of Romanian rescue animals to better understand the challenges they may have faced. This insight is invaluable in helping them transition successfully into home life.
Romanian rescues—both dogs and cats—are incredibly loving and resilient. While they may behave differently than UK-based rescues, they have an immense capacity to love and form deep, lasting connections.
Give them time—it will be so worth it.
Please note:
We prefer to rehome puppies to homes with existing resident dogs, as they benefit greatly from the companionship and guidance of another dog after spending their early weeks with their littermates. However, if an applicant can demonstrate that the puppy will be well-socialised with other dogs, we’re happy to consider the application.
